I'm not really sure what I want to do for the final project. I have two very preliminary ideas, but not a whole lot of direction. I'm thinking of either doing a self portrait that's about my identity as a sister - since my sisters are very important to me and have really shaped who I am and will continue to influence me the rest of my life and I, them.

OR
I took a public speaking class where we had to chose one topic to give four speeches on. my topic was homelessness in my hometown - asheville nc.  My second idea was to do something that is more of an awareness piece on the state of the city, how close it is to ending chronic homelessness and the gigantic task of ever really doing so.
I'm leaning towards the first idea at this point.

  1. I think you have two great ideas to stem from here. Especially since they both have some sort of personal meaning to you. Do you know how you are going to make this piece stand out from the other three? Will you incorporate painting, mixed media, etc?

  2. I think both your ideas are working. I'm wondering how you can show visually how your sisters influenced your life. I think the photo is interesting because you are all wearing scarves and similar sunglasses. I really like the repetition in the scarf pattern.

  3. Depends which topic you're more passionate about ... I could see a great personal collage piece with the first idea. The second could incorporate some great images and photos that could contrast the beauty of the city with the ugliness of the homeless problem. Sounds like the city is doing better with the problem, so you'd probably need to convey some kind of hopeful message in the piece.

  4. I really do believe bringing family into a piece is going to strengthen it tenfold. That being said, I think you also have a nice concept with your hometown - it's where you grew up, so of course you'll have strong feelings towards it. I love the photo of you and your sisters! It's great. I wonder if you could do something like them patching you together, or them putting together a puzzle that turns into you? Just some silly ideas to think about.

  5. Both ideas are interesting, and I can see why you have a hard time deciding between the two of them. Maybe if you think a bit more about how you would want to execute each piece, you'll have an easier time deciding?

  6. I think either of the ideas are great and you could do great things with them. However I feel like a personal piece about you and your sisters might be more fun for you but ultimately it's your decision.

  7. Both ideas sound intriguing, but I like the idea of sisterhood... it's personal and could be really expressive. Some things to consider could be what kind of imagery or textures you could use to convey the way in which your sisters have affected you, rather than literal images. My concept is kind of similar so I'm having to think about those things. Look forward to seeing the progress.

  8. I'm gravitating toward your second idea concerning homelessness. There are several offshoots of the basic premise I can think of, namely the stigma and stereotype of your average homeless person, mental illness as a contributing factor, and the nature of being "hidden in plain sight" wherein the extremely privileged pass by others who are severely down on their luck without a second thought for the well being of their fellow humans.

  9. I love your second concept. Over the weekend just collect as much as you can that could be worked in for this piece. Either way, I'm excited to see your progress

  10. Always so hard to be objective about family. I love that you are tackling personal issues and social statement though. Very common to be ambivalent about a direction...Maybe you could start with a general idea and see where the image takes you--accepting the accident. The reference image is fairly literal-- not photoshopped. Interesting image but what does it mean? This is fine, but there are many more options should you decided to layer and play with blending modes. The trick with your sisters is to make the viewer care because we have no personal stake in it. Confident you could do that however. The homeless issue is the "big idea" that deserves an epic solution...while avoiding the stereotypes (black, latino, etc) that logically would carry the story. We use cliches and stereotypes, but try to reinvent them, or show them in a way no one has thought of before. Would an installation work better than a print to convey this idea? A harder challenge i think, but also one I am confident you can pull off. Both are good sound ideas as points of departure.
