monday process

flower meanings:
carnation: birth flower of january, the month i was born
lilac: flower given at births or mothers day signifying new love and a mother's love for her child
gardenias: joy, sweet love, used in weddings
roses: also used in weddings often
dogwood: endurance
Lily: often given at funerals, signify purity
iris: wisdom
blackberry: pride or remorse

i have the sunrise to night sky to help with the "cyclical nature," i don't know if i'll keep that. I'm trying to show the passing of time through the types of flowers given at significant milestones in people's lives

  1. I really enjoy the bold look of the flowers in the bottom image but feel that they re competing to much in the top image.

  2. I love the textures that the flower petals have created and the colors are great. Your idea is really unique and it looks great so far.

  3. I enjoy the first image, due to the contrast between intricate flowers and a vast night sky, but that middle layer of white flowers is robbing some detail from the central group of flowers.

  4. The concept of using flowers for symbolism is great. The colors are a bit to bright for me, maybe play with some filters to add depth?

  5. I'm curious to see what your end product will look like, the images you have above are intriguing, however, some of them seem a bit unresolved. I love the creative research you have undertaken about the flowers to tie into your project, maybe you can focus a bit on each of their meanings and incorporate those concepts into the image.

  6. The idea of using the meaning of flowers is a great concept, but I'm curious about what these particular flowers mean to you. Right now they look a little busy with all the layers, but the night sky adds a lot of beautiful color that make the flowers stand out.

  7. I think your composition is working. I think the first image/background works best so far. I'm kind of question your concept a little bit though. Mainly because I don't know the symbolism behind most flowers. If I was looking at this in the hallway it would just look like a bunch of flowers. But I think more powerful when I know the symbolism behind them. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to incorporate that information into your final image?

  8. I'm thoroughly intrigued by what you've got so far. I think the blending of day to night has been done very well, but I'm not sure how it's working for the overall image. (that's not to say scrap it all together.. I'm just curious) I say keep working with that one for sure though.. I think that orange is just too bright for me. Maybe make the sunset less bold so that it brings more attention and compliments the flowers more.
Another thought is, what if you brought some dead or decaying flower images into it? That could really tie into the life cycles/stages of peoples life concept and could be very visually appealing. Just some thoughts! Excellent start. I love the collaged look and circular shape.

  9. Hi Ingrid

Great process, nice idea. maybe the bottom landscape can continue across to the right without having the flowers come down so far? it seems to throw the balance off a tad, plus i really like the horizon line. could there be a single flower in the middle of the bunch that comes forward with emphasis? the large group of flowers seems to be the focal point right now, with some slightly off balance in terms of color? are you communicating what you stated earlier in terms of what the flowers represent traditionally? if not, has the idea evolved? is it now just a bouquet of flowers? maybe they might provide a nice structure for something completely different-- a sun, insect, or whatever is your message -- to create a different visual hierarchy? great start.

  10. I really like the idea of research of different flower meanings to give your piece its meaning. I think this might be hard for the viewer to interpret this just by looking at the piece without the background info you provided. I also wonder about the shape your using of a bouquet and whether that has any significance. I like your feminine style that I've seen in other works of yours. Maybe you could experiment with integrating the flowers more into the landscape.

  11. I really love the crisp colors and shapes made by your composition. The nice detail of the mountains in the background grounds the piece and gives it a sort of meaning instead of just leaving it white and floating. I do think that you should try to get across the meaning of each flower somehow so it doesn't just look like a pretty image of flowers on a background. Maybe you could overlay text or handwriting kind of like a diagram, or in da Vinci's sketches. Ex: http://scribbledigit.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/davinci-machine.jpg
